KFCX is back!

This year there will be a few changes that will make for fun "series".

To quote someone...."less is more" the series will have only two races as part of the series.

The basics: First and third Sundays in October (Oct 4 & 18)

What: 3 race categories: A, B, and Beginner

Where: Moore Park

Moore Park offers a convenient, fast pace, and spectator friendly venue. We will strive to have the same quick course but a little longer.

Laurel beats me AGAIN! I actually had a substantial lead, but mechanical (aka a pinch flat....) caused me to run one lap, then steal Dave DeRoche's mtb.... got to love cross..... all in all it was a good day....the mud was perfect....no dust.

There's alway next week!

The Address is 6200 Hwy 140 Klamath Falls. (Hwy 140 is aka Lake of the Woods)

RidgeWater - Race 2 thru 4

The 2nd thru 4th races of the series is at RidgeWater. It's on Hwy
140 b/ Southview (all those flags), and Lakeshore drive.

You can't miss the entrance....it's the only majestic entry with a
large water feature. I will also have a small bright orange sign up.
But who knows, it may be too visible, and might be taken down....but
planning on having a sign.

ok...you get to the gate. Take RidgeWater Blvd. to the end. Don't
make any turns. Keep going and going .... you'll get to the end
which will be a large gravel parking lot, overlooking Klamath Lake and
Buck Island. (probubly one of the best views in town).

The parking and staging will be there for every race. from there the
registration is on the viewing deck (yes there is a viewing deck!)

From there after registration you proceed to the race location.
Please park in this area only.

Remember you can preride the course, it should be ready by 9am. Also
registration starts then. If this is your first race (or your
100th...ok then i don't need to tell you) part of doing well at CX is
the preride of the course. first time slow, the next time quicker or
slow. Also this works as a warm up.

You can ride to the location via the back door. i.e. thru the green
gate, down the dirt road, until you get to the bike path the awesome
switchback of about mile uphill. you eventually get to one of the
roads that will lead to RidgeWater Blvd. Or you could go up that awful
hill that no one i know can actually ride or even walk up. at the end
you'll need your climbing harnesses, and you'll be able to get to a
dirt road that will lead to the "gravel parking lot" If you don't know
what i'm talking about....just drive to the entrance as suggested
before.

This was my first race as a race promoter....hmmm where to begin?

5am-make coffee, wait, downtown KFalls experienced a blackout, no alarm clock, no automatic coffee brewing!
6am wake up because German Shepard is hungry, freak out because no coffee made for my volunteers, i'm supposed to be setting up the course with Zach and Jake....UGHHHHH!
6:30 am, Jake and Zach leave me to get all of the registration, raffle prizes, awards, and get my 5yr old ready, who tells me she is sick, then throws up her cough med....ughhhhh....
7am, suppose to be at the park setting up, instead, bathing daughter who has cough medicine all over her ...

fast foward....on my way to the park, realize i have no pins for numbers....freak out....go to ghetto Safeway, no safety pins, freak out more...call my volunteers to see if they have 100+safety pins....someone finds some in the back....i calm down (sort of).....it's almost 8, Zach calls to find out where i am....

8:15?....set up, register racers.....people are actually coming to my race!!! my volunteers show up, my friends show up to take pictures, racers show up to race!

Given that cyclocross is new to Kfalls, i.e. no one know what it is, i think i have recited the history of cylcocross where i am dreaming of Belgium circa early 1900's....and trying to explain that people really do like racing in the mud, cold, snow, ice....(not because they have to...)

There was definitely the regular S.OR Outlaw racers that loyally showed up for my inaugural race (thanks Richard, Vern, Joe, Kristi, Brian, Scott, Dave G, and about 1/2? of the DeSalvo Custom Cycling team.) But it also great seeing some old friends/new friends that used to race cross b/f life got in the way (Bryan, Stan, Chris G)

...Dave DeRoche raced on his new DeRoche frame, cross frame/break-away frame. He was 2nd A race, 1st time in 3 years racing cross???? we think he is secretly racing under a different idenity, in a different state, or in the middle of the night.... or is he just that good?!
The course....sweet! FAST, FAST, FUN....up stairs, down stairs, duck there's the trees.....now up the GRASSSSSSS.....the slowest grass....i ride ss, and this was the killer part of the course...i felt if i was going any slower, i would be going backwards! I actually almost fell over as i was almost at a dead stop.

For the most part the race was the smoothest, crash-free, almost no technical failures (ok i dropped a chain, only b/c i caught some air & came down too hard)....i was in cx heaven, i felt like my bike and i were made for each other ( actually love my bike!)....but where is that freakin' other gear! i got lost in the fun, joy of racing and having my friends cheer me on....I actually forgot, i was organizing the event.
Other fun stuff....Zach

who was my left and right hands (and feet) had the race from hell. Well, it started off well, as he was the course leader (well he designed the course....so he may have had some advantage) but didn't want to win the Prime sponsored by CYCLOCROSS Magazine (we already have a subscription) so he slowed down to let Jake our teammate claim the glory! Dave DeRoche won the prime for the A's. ok....from there it got bad to worse (for Zach that is)....(ok, maybe not in this exact order) 2nd lap, chain dropping, 3rd lap broke a pedal, 4th thru 8th....bee sting, last lap-pinch flat, all in front of my sick girl, Zoe, cheering him on, asking him if "all is ok?", and "good job" Zach! all in front of my ex-husband (actually it was very cool he was there so my daughter could see us race) Despite the calamities Zach experience, he got 3rd B-Men (4th overall)....i think he might be ready to upgrade?
Zoe....the best part of the race, was having my daughter cheer me on, yelling at the top of her lungs, "I LOVE YOU MOMMY, SWEET DREAMS!" and "CIAO BELLA MOMMY!" ringing that cowbell as hard as she could.....right before i got to grass from hell, which made the crowd wonder why i was smiling????

After my race, i actually just sat back and watched/cheered the A's. It was great to see so many people have so much fun. That was the feedback i got, from the spectators, the racers, and even Zach, who is now sick....bummer as he's going to Interbike, sick.

Now it's Monday....get emails from strangers who read about the race in the paper (didn't get misquoted, but wrong phone#!) and want to know where the next one is so they can come watch, a friend's wife tells me her husband was there to watch, and now wants to race!(this will be his first race of any kind).

Reflection....yes it was worth it! inhale, exhale, getting ready for KFCX#2 next week! again, a fast, flat, fun course, very ss friendly!

Despite, losing a chain, getting stung by a bee, flatting,breaking his pedal, Zach still got 3rd in the Men's B race. Thanks Z for setting up a fast and fun course!

KFCX's sponsors have come thru big time for a first time series....

Cyclocross will be offering subscriptions to their zine as primes for the first and final race of the series. That should get the pace going. Also magazines, and swag...

Hutch's and Redline have come through with a cx bike frame, maybe a 29'r, carbon fork, all for raffle to participants of the races...must be there to claim prize.

5 more days....be ready for a fast and fun course

Now that i'm done with all that hillclimbing nonsence (4 hillclimb races in 6 weeks!), i can put on my running shoes/mtb bike shoes and start training....

Zach has designed a sweet course at Moore Park that is super fast and fun! But a few slow spots that will get your lungs and quads burning....well mine are at least....he makes it look so ez.

It sounds like we might get a "few" riders out from Bend, S.OR, maybe even Redding/Shasta area.

I been doing some practices at Moore Park this past Monday, Zach, Jake, Chad, and Chris were out showing me how it was done. Jake will put a post out on the local yahoogroup for a practice at Moore Park on Thursday evening. Meet at Hutch's at 6.

I'll be happy to meet anyone at Roosevelt school at 6ish to work on starts, mounts/dismounts, and just answer any questions, etc.

CX is coming to Klamath Falls!!!!

Yipee, I am happy to say that cyclocross racing will be coming to Klamath Falls. I'm really hoping that once KFalls gets an understanding that cyclocross is a little something for everyone, it will get the cycling community excited about racing, and yes cyclocross!

This is perfect venue for many reasons. It will be a great early season primer for all of the S.Oregon racers, and possibly Central Oregon. The only other racing venue during this time is in Portland, which is about 5 hours of driving, not to mention the other expenses. Now that there is a local venue, it will draw some cx racers that raced in a former past life....or who can't seem to take the time to drive to Ashland/Grants Pass due to life's commitments, etc.....i've heard all the excuses.

Also the timing is perfect for those who don't understand that the weather should be cold, miserable, and the conditions muddy, snowy, icy.... i didn't say cx racing was sane. But if you've never race cross b/f, having it be miserable, may deter the naiive, and definitely would prevent those traveling from Ashland/Medford area.

Also, the venue will be great for the beginner, as I will have a separate race for that category, which will be a win/win for racing in the B class (where beginners typically will be discouraged, and the veteran racers frustrated).
